SPLLOC 1 Modern Times narrative task

Extracts from the Charlie Chaplin film "Modern Times" have been used for narrative data elicitation in numerous SLA research projects including our sister L2 French project.

In the narrative task used here with advanced learners, the students viewed a 5 minute extract from the film, starting from Chaplin's first encounter with the street girl as she steals bread from a shop. They were given a vocabulary list and a set of stills from the film as prompts, and were asked to re-tell the story to a member of the research team in their own words. After they had finished telling the story, the researcher asked some supplementary questions.

Extract from a sample native speaker telling of the story:

La historia comienza con una chica hambrienta que roba una barra de pan de un repartidor. Cuando corre para escapar, la chica choca con Chaplin y caen los dos al suelo. Entonces llega la policía.

El policía le pregunta a la chica: "Has robado tú el pan?" pero Chaplin dice: "No, no fue la chica, fui yo quien robó el pan."

Pero una mujer ve lo que está pasando y corre hacia el repartidor de pan y le dice: "Fue la hica, fue la chica, yo lo ví." Entonces el policía deja libre a Chaplin y arresta a la chica.

Chaplin quiere ir a la cárcel y decide ir a un restaurante y pedir mucha comida. Come mucho, mucho y como no tiene dinero para pagar, llama a un policía para que lo arreste. Cuando salen del restaurante Chaplin coge un puro y empieza a fumar. Al policía no le gusta esto ...
